The story began in Midgar, city of mako, where a corporate
superpower known as shinra used its monopoly of mako energy to dominate all
aspects of life, securing political power in the process. However, mako energy
was not the wellspring of happiness Shinra claimed to be, but rather the vitality
of the planet itself, the source of life. Some
began to realize: If we let this continue the planet will die. So these
individuals set up an anti-Shinra organization called Avalanche, and began
resistance efforts using guerrilla tactics. Cloud Strife was hired by the
Avalanche to bomb a mako reactor. The reactor strike awoke in cloud the
need to confront the holes in his past and his very reasons for being. And
that journey, perhaps too the heaviest toll...
Two years have passed...
Though midgar, city of Mako, city of prosperity has
been reduced to ruins, its people slowly but steadily walks the road to
reconstruction. However a mysterious illness called geostigma torments them.
With no cure in sight, it brings death to the afflicted one after another,
robbing the people of their fledgling hope. And so cloud, who walked away
from the life of a hero to live in solitude, must step forward yet again.
At the Tokyo Game Show 2006, Square Enix showed a
trailer of a director's cut of the film, titled Final Fantasy VII Advent
Children Complete for release on the Blu-ray Disc format. New scenes will
be added to the film, including one where Sephiroth impales Cloud with his
sword and then lifts his body up into the air. The film will also benefit
from high-definition video and audio that the Blu-ray format offers. As
of now, only a Japanese release has been confirmed. The cut had formerly
been expected to be released in mid 2007, but Square Enix announced at the
Tokyo Game Show 2007 that they would postpone the product until 2008.
